Conor McGregor Lists 4 Possible Opponent For MMA Return, And They’re All HUGE Names
Conor McGregor hasn’t stepped into the MMA octagon since November 2016, when he beat Eddie Alvarez for the UFC Lightweight Championship. He’s fought, of course, trying his hand at boxing against Floyd Mayweather last summer. But it’s been a while since we’ve seen McGregor do what he does best.
That should change soon. It’s long been expected that McGregor will get back to MMA some time this year. And this week he threw out four pretty huge names as potential opponents—including Floyd Mayweather.
Mayweather, of course, has been teasing a possible foray into MMA this week, posting videos of himself bouncing around inside an MMA octagon . Most experts doubt Mayweather will actually do it. But then, nobody thought Mayweather-McGregor would happen, either.
McGregor is certainly taking Mayweather seriously.
Freelance video journalist Adam Glynn caught up with McGregor on the streets of New York this week and asked him about Mayweather’s flirtation with MMA. McGregor said he was “excited” to see Mayweather’s social media posts. He also said that he’d “have respect” for Mayweather if he actually did it, but that “it will follow him for the rest of his days” if he doesn’t do it.
Glynn also asked McGregor if he knows who his next MMA opponent might be, and McGregor did not hesitate to list four huge names as possibilities, including Mayweather.
“I’m currently in negotiations to face my next opponent and we have many options,” McGregor explained. “There’s current interim lightweight champion [Tony Ferguson]. There’s a undefeated Dagestani [Khabib Nurmagomedov]. There may be a big Russian event. There’s obviously the [Nate] Diaz trilogy. Of course, the Mayweather fight is there. There’s many options, so we’re just at the table at the moment.”
This may just sound like more bullsh*t from the Conor McGregor hype machine. But this wasn’t the McGregor you see at press conferences and weigh-ins. He spoke calmly and candidly, like a normal person.
In fact, after talking about Mayweather, McGregor was asked about Ronda Rousey joining the WWE. McGregor’s face lit up, and he gave a really nice, heartfelt statement, gushing about Rousey being a “pioneer” of MMA and saying he was “delighted” for her.
