The NHL Booked Kid Rock to Play at the All-Star Game, and Twitter Is NOT Impressed (TWEETS)
The National Hockey League announced on Tuesday that Kid Rock will headline the entertainment at the 2018 NHL All-Star Game on January 28. He will perform during the second intermission.
There are lots of people who love Kid Rock, and those people were probably thrilled to hear this news. It’s not my intention to rain on their parade. However! The reality is Kid Rock is not particularly relevant to mainstream pop music anymore. The dude appeals to a very specific demographic.
Obviously the NHL is probably not going to go out and book serious hip-hop artists like Kendrick Lamar or Migos, nor are they going to get bubblegum pop acts like Ed Sheeran or Selena Gomez. But they still could have found somebody whose first hit single isn’t 20 years old.
“Bawitdaba” came out in 1998. And right now, somewhere in the world, there’s a 20-year-old college kid reading this and saying, what the hell is Bawitdaba? Hell, that might even be you.
Anyway, as you would expect, Twitter absolutely roasted the NHL’s choice of All-Star Game entertainment.

Did the NHL get turned down by 10,000 more prominent musicians of was Kid Rock a first choice? Either way, amazing.

If SNL parodied the NHL All Star Game, the skit would have Kid Rock as the headlining act. https://t.co/0lHaREaz1d

The NHL going from Nick Jonas and Carly Rae Jensen to Kid Rock for All-Star Game entertainment is like going from, uhh, nope, this is a new bar without proper analogy.

I guess 20 years after the NHL asked him to play the All-Star Game, Kid Rock finally accepted and they felt bad telling him they were no longer interested.

The NHL is your grandma buying you a BlackBerry because she heard that’s what “the kids are using” these days. If the BlackBerry was racist.

Why not the Baha Men? They could sing who let the dogs out 3 times in a row!

Minorities, people of color and women already feel like the NHL doesn’t gaf about them. Having Kid Rock as the All-Star game entertainment just underlies that point.

I’ll leave you with this video of Kid Rock performing at Woodstock ’99, which, as far as today’s youth are concerned, may as well have been Woodstock ’69.
