Apparently English soccer has unwritten rules just like American baseball.

On Sunday, Manchester City defeated arch rivals Manchester United 2-1 at Old Trafford. Their victory ended Manchester United’s 40-game unbeaten streak at home and extended Manchester City’s lead atop the EPL standings to a daunting 11 points.

The game itself was hard-fought, and City celebrated the win like they’d just won a championship:

Unfortunately, United took exception to City’s euphoria. They believed their opponents were intentionally “rubbing their noses in defeat” by “whooping and cheering” too much.

According to reports, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho came out of his locker room to tell Manchester City to turn their music down and be quiet. He was then confronted by Manchester City goaltender Ederson Moraes in the tunnel. At first they yelled back and forth at each other in Portuguese, but then Mourinho switched back to English, shouting at Moraes, “you f*cking show respect! Who are you?”

Pretty soon a melee broke out involving 20 players, coaches, and staff members. Punches and water bottles were thrown. Mourinho was apparently squirted with water and/or milk, while Manchester City assistant coach Mikel Arteta suffered a cut to the head that left blood streaming down his face. Some reports say he was hit by a bottle thrown by United’s Romelu Lukaku.

There is no video of the incident as of Monday morning. However, the English Football Association will be investigating this matter, and presumably that will entail a thorough examination of CCTV footage from the tunnel.

Hopefully that footage will soon find its way to the interwebs so we can all see what really happened.
